Really good for presentations as well as concept mapping, very clean interface - can zoom in close to images, e.g. art.
Can set up a pathway to show slides in order wanted. Have to download tool. Can copy onto a wiki, see below.

To set up a brainstorm, open Window / Formatting Palette and drag it below the main toolbar.
Choose shape, fill of nodes and line colours - good to choose middle range colours - right arrow on main tool bar shows map with a black background.
To add a node to a map: Command N (or CTRL N). Text: Command T. Choose start and end arrows if needed.
Add a node, drag corner to size wanted. Check text size - change in Formatting Palette.
Can change the link shape in Formatting Palette, to an arc or s curve - really nice handles to control it's shape (as in Illustrator).
To edit text, select T in main palette (or Cmd T), click 3 times in a node or click text in a node and then select with mouse.
Other method: right click node, select Node Info, make changes. Can add notes and keywords as well.
To duplicate a node, select it, copy and paste with Command C, Command V.
But, really nice rapid prototyping facility in main toolbar. Select it and drag out from a node as many times as want
Use link tool to draw arrows between nodes, add label in centre of line if wanted. Change font size in formatting palette.
Hand icon in main tool bar slides the map.
Can copy a style of a node by selecting node to copy from, Cmd Shift C or right click and copy style. Then select node to copy to and Cmd Shift V or right click and apply style.
Move nodes using selection tool and dragging or arrow keys.
Use the selection tool to select multiple nodes and arrows and make changes to all in one go.
Zooming: Zoom in: Command = Zoom out: Command -
(Reset to 100% size: Command ')
or use magnifier in toolbar - +, -, and open toggles a selection larger and smaller.
Or, open Window / Exploration Palette choose Zoom (to fit a selection to the size of the window) or Fit (to fit the map contents to the window).
To highlight a section of the map by lessening the opacity of the rest (useful if want to talk about a section). Open Windows / Exploration Palette. Select a subset and slide opacity bar, can expand selection.
Layers: Can add a duplicate or empty layer to build up a slide show. Can move a selection to a different layer
Images, documents and web links can add to zoom in on or link to.
Image: can drag from a web page into a node
Background image: add the image to its own layer and lock the layer.
Adding content: Web page - open browser to page and drag address icon onto node or background. Can change name, box with "web" gives an active link. Can put several on a node.
Resources from your computer - Windows/Resources, locate and drag files over.
To add a background image to a map:
Open Windows / Layers window and Resources window. Drag image over from Resources - comes into a node wrapper. With special selection tool (middle one) selected, select image in node, copy and paste, delete original node. With regular selection tool drag resize handles to widen image. In layers window, lock background layer - it greys out so can work on top of it.
Saving: Can save as a png, jpg or pdf or an interactive web graphic (map).
If the map contains local files, use the File > Save As VPK (VUE Package) choice.
If it is saved as vue, you can always go back to make changes.
Uploading to the CLC:
Need to modify the html code:
Save interactive map as Interactive Web Graphic (don't have any spaces in the file names before you save). You will get 2 files - html and png (e.g. test.html and test.png - png is an image file like gif and jpg).
Upload png image to the CLC. Don't insert - the html file will do this. Click update group homepage. Go back into the edit and you will see the png file is in the embedded files list.
You need to find out what the CLC is going to call this image. To find out it's name, in the CLC page, go to another part and place the image in here (delete it later). Use the angle brackets <> (View/Edit Source) to look for this image name - it will be on a line which looks like this:

The section you will need to copy into the HTML file code is this part: /GroupDownloadAttachment.asp?GroupId=40877&AttachmentID=48021 Take a copy of this part of the code showing up in your CLC page.
The HTML file code needs to be stripped back. Open it in a text editor such as Word Pad or Text Wrangler (not Notepad) - remove everything before the <div>, remove everything after </div>.
Paste the new file into the img line at src="
Into this line also add border="0" as shown below, to stop a border appearing around the edge.
Add alt="name" to all elements - img and all area elements (not map or div).
The <div> should start something like this:

This code can then be copied and pasted into the place you want it in the CLC, using the <>. It should put the png image in place.
To put more than 1 image map on a page, change the name vuemap where it occurs twice or else the mapping will get mixed up.

Paste in a selection of text or words.
A twiddle ~ between words can group phrases.
Right click a term in a Wordle to remove it and it will re-compute - take out common words, names,...
To capture the Wordle use Print Screen or a screen capture tool such as HyperSnap, Jing or Grab.
Use Photoshop, Paint or other image software to crop and save as a jpg or gif.
Or use this online image tool - open it in www.pixlr.com/editor/
Or can create a mini poster at www.bighugelabs.com/education.php - use the Motivator option. email a copy to yourself.
Paste Wordle into a layer over on top of an image - can reduce opacity of the image.
Ideas for the classroom:
Paste in sections of speeches, news articles, song lyrics, poems, essays, a Project Gutenberg ebook, a lesson recall, a memory brainstorm, frequently misspelled words, reflections, introduction to a course - keywords, unit outline, summarising content, a student presentation, a student essay, page one or chapter one of a novel, ...
Look at frequency of words, writing styles, vocabulary.
What's missing - paste in a set of words with one term missing, e.g. animal classifications, muscles in the arm, the names of continents, a book in a series, one word in a set (numbers 20 to 30 in French), prime ministers, ingredients in a recipe, ...
Guess the Wordle - guess a fairytale,
Students in groups gather keywords, add to a share site such as TypeWith.me?, http://typewith.me/, then produce Wordle.
Prereading - generate Wordle of a news article and ask students to predict what the main ideas are and generate a headline.
Compare Wordles generated from 2 different speeches or from 2 different new sources.
Analyse presentation notes and add as an introduction to a talk.
A Wordle can be enlarged if copied onto an overhead transparency and projected onto a wall.
Contents of student blogs or journals made into Wordles to look at themes.
Introducing a unit, e.g. sustainable development - make a Wordle from Wikipedia article and look for themes.
Students list skills they are confident in to form one Wordle and skills they need more time with in another.
Make 2 Wordles from different sections of a novel - students compare them.
